Doctorate
The PhD Program in Theology aims at developing the capacity for scientific research in the theological field, as well as the training of university professors of theology and theological advisors to international and national organizations, both civil and ecclesiastical.
Requirements for obtaining the Doctoral degrees
- Have a minimum of 24 months attendance at PUC-Rio.
- Pass the qualifying exam (TEO 3004).
- Obtain a minimum of 45 credits (including Master's)
- Have proven sufficient reading skills in two of the following languages: French, English, Italian, or German.
- For students who choose the Biblical Theology Concentration Area, proven knowledge in Advanced Biblical Greek and Advanced Biblical Hebrew is required.
- Up to forty-two months after registration, submit the work (2/3 of the Thesis) to the Advisor and two other professors indicated by the PPG Coordination before the defense.
- Up to forty-seven months after registration, he/she must submit the final text of the thesis at the Department's secretariat.
- Defend the Thesis by the 48th month after matriculation.
- Defend the Thesis before the examining board in public and be approved in Doctoral Thesis (TEO 3001).
- After the defense the student will have 180 days to make corrections and deliver the final text to the department.
Admission and Enrollment
- Be a Master in Theology or Science of Religion in a Brazilian Institution recognized by CAPES or in a foreign Institution with a diploma recognized by IES in Brazil.
- A graduate in Theology will be required for those holding a Master's degree in Religious Studies.
- Be accepted by the Department based on academic record, curriculum vitae, professional experience, and interviews.
- Submit to the PPG a research project to be approved by an examining board.
- Comply with the other requirements indicated in the announcement of the selection process in effect at the time of admission.
